The basics are simple one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories. Therefore, individuals to lose one pound must burn 3,500 calories. Individuals must first calculate how many calories they need a day. On average, females will require between 1,800 to 2,000 daily and males 2,000 to 2,500 daily all of course depending on the activity level. Individuals must determine how many calories they presently consume on a daily basis.

Individuals will lose what is called water weight when beginning a diet. The reduction in sodium will allow the body to release excess fluids that are stored. Eating a 1,000 less calories, a day for instance, dramatically reduces the sodium intake. Sodium will force the body to store fluids, which puts a strain on the internal organs. Eating smarter is the best way to start. Proteins are necessary to maintain muscle tone. Muscle as it builds will consume more energy, which means the body is burning calories.

Fruits and vegetables along with certain carbohydrates are beneficial. Some carbohydrates digest quickly which will spike the blood glucose. The body can process fats and carbohydrates better if the foods are digested slowly. Low glycemic foods are considered better for slower digestion. Not getting the proper amount of sleep at night can sabotage a diet plan. Most individuals need at least seven hours of sleep a night.

Check labels for fat content and calories. There is no way around the fact that individuals wanting to lose weight must change their eating habits. Dieters must be in the right frame of mind and have the desire; otherwise, there will be too many excuses as to why it cannot be done. Use smaller plates to help trick the mind into thinking there is more there. Smaller plates make the portions look bigger. Drink plenty of fluids preferably water. Some individuals use lemon wedges in their water claiming it helps them drink more. Exercise, but build up to it by doing more each day.
