Mike Cianciullo was 5 feet 7 inches tall and over 300 pounds. His son, Matt, was 5 feet 3 inches tall and over 300 pounds. People would stare at the father and son when they went out to eat. Mike knew he needed to make drastic changes for himself and his son. Mike began to consider weight loss surgery.
Matt did not jump on board with the idea of surgery right away. He knew his dad had several health issues, but he did not really see an issue with his size. Both father and son eventually realized they could not lose weight by just dieting.
They spoke with a doctor and decided Lap-Band surgery was a better option than gastric bypass surgery. Lap-Band is an outpatient surgery. With Lap-Band surgery, a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. The doctor can adjust the bands, and the surgery is reversible, if necessary.
The duo prepared for the surgery by losing between 5-10 pounds each, as ordered by their doctor. In addition, they prepared their minds. This meant they knew they had to make some substantial changes in the way that they ate. If they did not change their eating habits along with the surgery, their weight loss would be minimal.
In 2009, Mike and Matt had Lap-Band surgery. Everything went very well. They both stayed on a liquid diet for two weeks and then switched to only soft foods for two more weeks. In the months that followed, they learned what and how much they could eat.
With support and motivation from family members, Matt has lost over 160 pounds. Mike has lost over 100 pounds. Being older, Mike has found losing weight more difficult than Matt. He still keeps going, and is determined to reach his goal weight.
