?The Lap Band is a reversible bariatric surgery option. However, the Lap Band may not be an ideal choice for every patient considering weight loss surgery. There are several other surgical alternatives to the Lap Band procedure.
The Realize Band
Like the Lap Band, the Realize Band is an FDA-approved adjustable gastric band. However, there are some major differences between the two devices. Realize is designed to fit all sizes, and it offers more adjustment options. While the Realize Band has a lower fill volume threshold than the Lap Band, the Realize utilizes an injection port that does not require sutures.
Gastric Roux-en-Y
A gastric Roux-en-Y, or a laparoscopic gastric bypass, does not use any implanted devices. During the procedure, the surgeon will separate and seal a small portion of the patient's stomach, forming a pouch. Then, the newly created pouch is connected to the small intestine. Although a gastric bypass carries less risks than the Lap Band, laparoscopic gastric surgery cannot be reversed. However, this type of surgery can facilitate a greater amount of weight loss than the Realize Band or the Lap Band.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Like the gastric Roux-en-Y, there are no adjustable bands involved in a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. In comparison to other bariatric surgeries, a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy does not generate as much weight loss. During a sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon will use a stapling device to shrink the size of the patient's stomach. The result is a tube-shaped stomach with a drastically reduced intake capacity. For those who have a morbidly obese BMI, a sleeve gastrectomy can be done as the initial procedure of a weight loss surgery plan, which is followed by a Roux-en-Y. Nutritional supplements and post-operative care are required after a gastrectomy.
